Privacy

We keep your email address so you can sign in and get emails about the commitments you're in.

What's shown about the people in a commitment depends on that commitment's settings. Its creator chooses, separately for before and after the goal is met, whether to show nobody's identity (only the count), names, or names and email addresses. The settings are fixed when the commitment is created and shown on its page before you join. Whatever is shown can be seen by anyone who can see the commitment: for a public commitment, that's anyone.

Your email address is only ever shown if the creator chose that and you joined knowing it. The same goes for a creator who chose to see members' email addresses: the commitment page says so before you sign up. If a commitment shows names, you give the name it shows when you sign up; we never use your email address as your name.

We keep what you sign up for, when, and the comments you post. Anonymous comments are stored with your account so moderators can act on reports and you can delete them, but your name isn't shown. We don't use tracking cookies or analytics. The one cookie keeps you signed in.

Stopping email

Every invitation has a link to decline it, so we won't email you about that commitment again, and a link to never be sent invitations from groupcommit.org at all. Messages from an organiser have a link to stop them, and you can leave a commitment at any time. None of these need you to sign in. Mail apps' “Unsubscribe” button works too.

To remember an opt-out we keep a one-way hash of your email address, not the address itself, along with which commitment it's for. We keep it even if you delete your account, so the opt-out keeps working. If an email to you bounces permanently or is marked as spam, our email provider tells us and we stop emailing that address, except for sign-in links you ask for. The organiser is told how many addresses on their list asked not to be invited, but not which ones.

You can download your data or delete your account and everything in it at any time.
